Holding Hand Robot

In the area of the HRI, robots that can communicate with children have been extensively investigated.

In particular, it’s difficult to make children be frank if he starts to rebuff the partner. So it is important how robots behave for children at their first meeting. We hypothesize that physical embodied communication, such as walking hand in hand, improves the relationship between robots and children. Because clinical psychology has shown that walking hand in hand has positive effects.

In order to test this hypothesis, we observed the course of the communication between robots and children after walking hand in hand. The kindergarten teacher remotely controlled this humanoid robot. And the experiment was designed to examine one-on-one communication between children and the robot. I asked thirty seven children whose ages are from 5 to 6 years old to play with the robot. I divided the children into an experimental group and a control group. In the experimental group, the robot and the child walked together hand in hand at first. Each child played with the robot for about 30 minutes at children’s kindergarten.

As a result, I found that the children in the control group observed the robot from a distance. On the other hand, the children in the experimental group gazed at the robot even at a close range. Besides, many positive results, which support my hypothesis are obtained. The results of the experiment clearly showed that a good relationship can be built between a robot and a child when the child walks hand in hand with the robot in the early stages of interaction.
